The Rocky Horror Show
STAGEtwo commissioned me to design programs for their 10th annual production of The Rocky Horror Show. They sought a program that would not only reflect the themes and aesthetic of their production, which closely aligns with the original 70s film, but also acknowledge the history of past performances. I envisioned a design inspired by punk rock zines, utilizing DIY lettering and layered graphics to capture the show’s eclectic and whimsical essence.
In delving into the themes of Rocky, I decided to incorporate references to classic horror films. To accomplish this, I included stills from the public domain 1910 film Frankenstein, arranged in chronological order to narrate its storyline. Additionally, I created a timeline running along the bottom of the program pages, highlighting key events and landmark productions from previous years. This added layer of context enriched the audience's understanding of the show's legacy. The resulting program received widespread acclaim, earning praise from both the studio and audience members alike.
Pericles Show Program
The Evansville Shakespeare Players approached me with a unique challenge for their unconventional production of "Pericles," and I eagerly accepted. Their rendition of the play combined the classic Shakespeare script with modern stage elements. To reflect the fusion of modernism and antiquity seen in the production, I crafted a program that blended etchings from early printings of the play with a bold and vibrant design aesthetic. Additionally, I incorporated dashed lines—a playful nod to the way a hero's journey at sea is often depicted on maps. This program is part of my ongoing series of elevated program designs, where I strive to go beyond mere informative text and use design elements to enhance and amplify the thematic essence of the onstage performance.
