Romeo and Juliet

Romeo and Juliet is one of the most iconic works in theater history, with countless designers using it as a canvas to showcase their skills. When the Evansville Shakespeare Players approached me to create the poster for their modern and sleek take on the show, I was thrilled by the opportunity to bring fresh life to this timeless classic.

My goal was to design a piece that balanced literal and abstract representations, connecting the production’s modern style with the show’s enduring themes. For the literal elements, I referenced Saul Bass’s iconic design style, incorporating bold shapes and clean lines to evoke a sense of classic sophistication. This choice tied the piece to the legacy of Romeo and Juliet while grounding it in timeless design principles.

For the abstract elements, I sought to reflect the production's focus on the division between the two feuding families. Using jagged, modernist textures, I created a backdrop that resembled ripped fabric or fragmented maps—symbolizing the violent, fractured separation between the Montagues and Capulets. These textures gave the piece a striking emotional edge while maintaining a sleek, contemporary aesthetic.

The design had to be versatile enough to adapt across multiple formats, including event posters, social media graphics, program covers, and event banners. Adjusting the design for various aspect ratios without losing its impact was a key challenge, but the result was a cohesive visual identity that captured the attention of both the theater’s patrons and online audiences.

The Evansville Shakespeare Players were thrilled with the final design, which received positive feedback from audiences and significantly boosted engagement on Facebook. The poster became a cornerstone of their marketing campaign, contributing to the success of their winter season.

Allison Phillips Gig Posters

Creating gig posters often presents a unique challenge: the artist has nearly complete creative freedom to craft a graphic that is both captivating and informative. My process typically begins by gathering event details and asking the artist what "vibe" they envision for the poster. While many responses are vague—like "fun" or "spooky"—working with Allison Phillips was different. Her direction was more distinct, suggesting “moons, lots of stars, indie space vibes” and “winter nature, forest in the snow vibes.” Though still open-ended, these prompts gave me a clear sense of the aesthetic she wanted.

To ensure my designs aligned with Allison’s artistic identity, I delved into her music and social media presence. I noticed a consistent indie sensibility, paired with a grounded, natural energy. Inspired by this, I designed posters that felt organic and timeless, avoiding overly polished or modern styles. The goal was to create pieces that looked lived-in, perhaps even vintage, reflecting the enduring quality of Allison’s music.
