Allison Phillips Album Release
Consistency is Key
When Allison Phillips reached out needing a revamped album cover and promotional materials in just two days, I knew this project would require a different approach. Unlike past album designs, where I started from scratch with discussions and sketches, this time I had to refine and elevate existing artwork—adding a professional polish while preserving the original vision.
I began by deconstructing the given design, adjusting the color palette to better match the tone of Allison’s music. We then debated whether the artwork needed text, ultimately deciding to keep the cover clean and instead use the typography I developed as a branding element across all promotional materials.
With the album art finalized, I moved on to the release poster and social media campaign. Given minimal direction beyond the necessary text, I sought inspiration in classic letterpress prints, particularly the work of Hatch Show Print. I combined that vintage aesthetic with a modern, layered background, incorporating the album art while keeping the typography as the focal point. To ensure maximum reach, I adapted the design into multiple aspect ratios for different social media platforms, creating a cohesive digital presence leading up to the release.
The final design marked a departure from the highly illustrative gig posters I had created for Allison in the past, but she loved it. In fact, she commissioned a modified version for show merchandise, resulting in a cohesive set of album art, posters, social media graphics, and shirts—all designed under tight time constraints. The show was a success, with many fans leaving with their first Allison Phillips t-shirt, reinforcing the impact of a strong, unified visual identity.
